I’ve been driving in the Philippines for quite some time now, about 6 years or so, and I still feel like a new driver. I guess Philippine driving is quite different from that of the United States, Europe, or those countries that are developed.

In the Philippines, you have to have a strong heart and you have to be brave in order to drive good. Drivers here in the Philippines care only about their own selves, and do not give a damn about all others who have a right to the use of the road.

Specially Jeepney drivers, Bus drivers, Tricycles, and other modes of public transport, with the exception of trains. These drivers do not care even if you blow your horn on them or if they are getting in your way, as long as they get to pick up or drop off passengers. They would often stop in the middle of the road just so they could do those things. As such, you would eventually be making a sudden stop, and even end up cursing those kinds of drivers. But, you can’t do anything about it.

Also, you would have to be brave and take every chance you get to get ahead of the other drivers, because they won’t give way even if you were there first. Even if its a green light, you would have to look both ways because a lot of drivers would beat the red light but they never get caught. It’s like they are color blind and could not distinguish between green and red.

Also, you would have to practice defensive driving. People would just walk on to the road without a care in the world. You would have to watch out for them because they do not care if you are going on a fast pace. They will walk when they want to walk and do not care if the walk light is red.

So, all I’m saying is that to drive in the Philippines, you would have to be ready for all possibilities. Practice defensive driving in order to be safe. And at the same time take all the chances you get to get ahead of the others because you will really not move forward if you wait for them to stop.
