The Deadliest Warrior hits Season 2: SWAT vs. GSG 9

First, what is The Deadliest Warrior? The Deadliest Warrior is a show that pits two people or parties against each other to see who is “deadliest.” Hence the name “The Deadliest Warrior.” The show doesn’t just pick people to fight against each other, they pick characters that will never meet because they are either dead, extinct, or won’t actually fight each other. Their subjects span across the time spectrum. They have covered the Ninja, Samurai, Apache, Viking, and lots more. They study these characters by looking at their weapons and skills. Then the results of these studies will be put in a computer simulator which will run a simulation for 1000 battles using the data they have gathered. The party that gets the most wins is declared to be The Deadliest Warrior at the end of the show.

The Deadliest Warrior kicks off its second Season (Season 2) with a Season Premiere. In this season premiere (S02E01), they pit the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team against the Grenzschutzgruppe 9 or Border Guard Group 9 (GSG 9).

The SWAT team is the elite special forces of US law enforcement. “SWAT was formed in direct response to a tragic killing spree on the University of Texas campus in Austin. August of 1966, a man named Charles Whitman went to the top of the clock tower and started shooting innocent people. It took the local police an hour to get to the top of the tower and stop his actions. 13 people were killed and dozens were injured.”

The GSG 9 is the top secret paramilitary arm of the German Police. “The GSG 9 was formed in 1972, after Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics. The German Police at that point was completely incompetent in dealing with the situation. 11 Olympians were actually murdered. The German Government vowed that this would never happen again. And the GSG 9 was operational just 6 months after the murders.”

The statistics of an average SWAT team member are HEIGHT: 5″11, WEIGHT: 190 lbs., GEAR: 60 lbs., and ARMOR: Kevlar Vest and Helmet (see the picture below):

The weapons of the SWAT that are used in the program are LWRC PSD, BENELLI M4, TASER SHOCKWAVE, and REMINGTON 700 SNIPER RIFLE (see the pictures below):

The statistics of an average GSG 9 member are HEIGHT: 6″, WEIGHT: 200 lbs., GEAR: 60 lbs., and ARMOR: Kevlar Vest and Helmet (see the picture below):

The weapons of the GSG 9 that are used in the program are HK 636, REMINGTON 870, STINGBALL GRENADE, and HK PS G1 SNIPER RIFLE (see the pictures below):

Warning: Spoilers up ahead…

In the end, the SWAT team got the best of the match-up.

I agree with the notion that the SWAT team won because of their superior weapons. But, if it was down to skills, the GSG 9 would have had the upper hand. Dealing with criminals is an entirely different scenario from dealing with terrorists. The SWAT team are trained to deal with the most vicious criminals, while the GSG 9 are specially trained to deal with the most dangerous terrorists. If it was a test of skills, both having the same weapons, then I would pick the GSG 9. But, in this case, American know-how got the best of them.

Anyway, Watch the show, I’m sure you’ll like it.
