Xerox v. Photocopy : What Term To Use
Did you know that the correct term to use is photocopy, not xerox? The term xerox is the technology developed by Fuji which burns a copy of the image into the paper. Jurisprudence dictates that the term xerox, although used synonymously with photocopy, is exclusive to the use of Fuji machines. This would mean that you can only use the term xerox when the machine that you will be using for image copy is that of the Fuji industry. For all other image copy machines, the term that should be used is photocopy.
As such, using the term photocopy is better than using “xerox.” This is due to the reason that we are not sure if the machine to be used for the image transfer or copy is that of the Fuji industry. It would be a hassle to ask first if the machine to be used is Fuji made in order to use the term xerox.
On a side note, I think that the terms xerox and photocopy will still be used interchangeably. The difference will not actually influence the public into using the word photocopy. for one thing, the word xerox is shorter than the word photocopy. Also, it is easier to pronounce. another reason is that, it is easier to remember and a majority of the students use the term xerox rather than photocopy.
Well, I’m starting to familiarize myself with the use of photocopy instead of xerox. Actually, we made it shorter and term it as “photocs.” Who knows, maybe “xerox” will actually be used exclusively for Fuji machines in the near future.
